Overview:

This is a process based artwork. During this project children will be collecting collage materials of one color (brown, green, red, yellow, etc.) Collage materials can be traditional art materials (pom poms, popsicle sticks, beads, etc.), recycled materials (paper towel rolls, caps, egg cartons, etc.), found objects in the house (old toys no longer used, magazines, etc.), or found materials outside (sticks, rocks, leaves, etc.) For my example, I am only going to complete the project in one color but you could complete this project with your child in every color imaginable. If you are going to do this project with more than one color you could take your collage materials and sort them into color categories first before beginning, you could take a nature walk and then create color collage with materials from your walk. The possibilities are endless - just have fun with it!

Project Directions:

Step One:

Collect collage materials. Look at the overview for a suggested list of materials you could collect or how you could collect them. Review colors as your child selects materials to be used in the collage.

Additional Learning Opportunity:

You could have your child practice cutting or ripping materials to include in their project. For instance, the chosen color could be cut or ripped out of magazines.

Step Two:

Glue the materials onto a colored piece of paper that matches the color selected for the collage. If colored paper is not available then look at the alternative supply list. I used art materials, recycled materials, and outdoor found materials in my color collage. Brown is an excellent color collage choice if you do not have many art materials since brown outdoor found objects and brown recycled objects are more easily accessible.

Additional Learning Opportunity:

As you are collecting materials or after your child is done gluing materials you could discuss the different shapes they included in their artwork.
